Here is a article my brother Peter wrote up for the No Worries Club blog.

My brother and I have been developing an interest in horse care and training since we got our first Welsh pony cross a number of years ago. Without having any prior experience with horses, we learned the ropes by hopping on and figuring it out. A few helpful friends gave us some tack, and we made do without a saddle for a long time. Calliope is an old pony and was a perfect learning horse for us, but she is also small and we really wanted a horse that would be useful to us for a long time.

In the early part of last year, David (who was then 11 years old) scraped together his hard earned dollars from mowing and purchased an 11 year old Morgan brood mare from a farm in south-central North Dakota. Darla was brought home and we all felt we had "a lot of horse" to work on and learn from. We chose the Morgan breed because our family liked their ability to be good for riding as well as light draft work. We run a small diversified family farm with milk cows, hogs, chickens, beef etc. and have large gardens that would benefit from the use of a horse for cultivating. The future of our horse training will include, God willing, teaching Darla to work in a harness. Check out our family farm at www.BartlettFarm.us.

I think we started horse training like most beginners. We searched the internet and bought a few helpful books on the subject, and attempted to put together our own method of training. I took the lead in training since it was hard for us to know what we should be doing. David helped me out as much as he could.

For a while we thought we were making significant progress and were leading, and lunging Darla with a rider. We didn't quite trust her enough to go out of the training area without being on a rope. With a lack of consistency on our part, she didn't trust us either. I don't blame her.

Looking back, we could have progressed a lot faster if we had found out about Downunder Horsemanship and the No Worries Club a lot sooner. One day, June 13th last year, I was down in the valley doing my version of desensitizing to Darla (probably counter-productive, sort of sneaking a plastic bag up as close as I dare to a sensitive area hoping she wouldn't notice) when I turned to see David running down the hill with a package in his hands. He was almost out of breath and beaming with excitement. He handed me a copy of Clinton's Ground Manners Short Course and showed me Clinton's book Establishing Respect and Control for English and Western Riders.

We couldn't hardly believe it! The biggest surprise was inside the cover of the hardcover book, on the full page picture of Clinton and Mindy. Displayed in permanent marker was Clinton's autograph that read "To David and Darla - Clinton Anderson." It was one of those moments that we thank God for! God provided exactly what we needed exactly at the right time. I am still thankful for the frustrations that came about as a result of our attempt at training before we knew about "The Method." Our experiences, like David's getting kicked in the thigh, humbled us and made us pray to God for what the next step to take was in regard to horse training.

The package that day came from No Worries Club member, DeborahN, who has been a friend of Mom's for a long time. She introduced David to Clinton Anderson's programs via the internet when she found out he was doing a Walkabout Tour in Minneapolis Minnesota in June 2011. David was unable to go, and very disappointed. This made the surprise gift of the books so exciting for us.

That same afternoon that we got the books, I began the first exercise of establishing my hula hoop of personal space and was amazed at what consistency will do. Darla learned quickly that I was serious in my role as trainer. The steps presented in the book are so thorough, that there is no way that the horse can do anything but respond correctly; provided that the handler remembers and executes the steps correctly.

David and I read the book through, and I took many pages of notes. I made up my own "Arena Mates" using the dos and don'ts of each lesson. We also made our own handy stick and string; a length of PVC water pipe and a cotton clothesline rope. To this day, we don't have a real handy stick. Our hillbilly pipe with a rope tied to the end serves the same purpose, although we now see why a real handy stick is preferable.

Progress came slowly and we hit a few bumps along the way. We really needed to visualize some of the concepts in the book in order to make good sense of the explanations. So, for David's 12th birthday, the family chipped in and bought him a No Worries Club membership. Combined with the detailed book, the videos and online forum that comes with the club seem to provide almost everything needed for someone to learn to train a horse on their own.

I hope by what I have related to you so far, that I have not led you to believe that I am an expert horse trainer--because I'm not. In fact, I have only "mastered" about half of the fundamental level training with Darla at this point. But I do intend to persevere and accomplish all the things that we envision for our horses, and eventually reap the fruit of this wonderful horse training experience.

January update

On the tenth on January we butchered our beef cow, it was the first time we had butchered a beef cow so we had to learn everything, the hardest part was the gutting and the skinning because we don't have a tractor to lift it up so Jonathan had to do the gutting and the skinning right on the ground which is not the easiest to do, thankfully we didn't have any snow which is very unusual in January because we normally have about three feet of snow and even now we only have about five inch's of snow. and then recently we butchered our two hogs which are a lot easier then doing beef.

After butchering the two hogs we had quite a bit of lard again we now we are able to make donuts again.

This is where we hang our meet until we we cut it up. We can joke and say that we hang our animals to be butchered in our kitchen.

You can't read them very well but for Peter's birthday I got him two of the Kendrick brothers films Courageous and Flywheel we had got their two middle films but we had not got their oldest film yet.

For slicing the side pork we used a electric meat slicer which works really well.

Last week Peter was not able to train Darla at all Because Peter and I were getting ready to pour a concrete slab which Peter, Jonathan, Andrew and I did to day, I will post some pictures on that soon.

From the title you can probably guess what the post is about. Last weekend a friend of Mom's went to one of Clinton Anderson's (you probably know that I'm a fan of his) Walk About Tours in ST.Paul MN When she was there she bought me two books.

This book is about establishing respect and control for English and Western riders.

She also had Clinton Anderson autograph the book, even thought she had to wait in line for one hour to get it.

The second book that she got me was all about ground work.

Today Della had her calf at about 4:00 in the morning, so of course we also had to get up and dry the calf off so it wouldn't get cold and die. Here is some pictures of both the young pigs and the calf . You can go over to Mom's blog to get more details on the pigs. The sow had 13 piglets it would have been 14 but one never finished growing inside her.

Here is some pictures of what we have been up to. For the past few nights we have been watching Clinton Anderson's Correcting Problems on the Trail DVDs, I like Clinton Anderson better than most horse trainers that I have watched because he is using a lot of car terms when he explains how to do something. Yesterday I received my first newsletter from the North Dakota Morgan Horse Association and am looking forward to getting the March newsletter.

Mom has been helping me to train Darla every day.

After buying Darla the people that I bought her from gave me a free subscription to the North Dakota Morgan Horse Association ndmorganhorse.com. The editor we know because she lives in Bottineau (and also because we went and looked at her horses) asked me to write an article on how I got interested in Morgan horses. The article is below.

My name is David Bartlett and I’m 11 years old and have been home schooled all my life. I first started getting into horses after we got a free 30-year- old mare in 2007 from a friend, and it still wasn’t until after I went to the 2010 Minot State Fair that I started riding the horse we had more. For a while I rode bare back and got dumped in the mud a couple of times. I bought a saddle, and then in September I was reading a farmsteading book and they mentioned Morgans were dual purpose horses. Last summer, I built myself a roundpen. I started getting interested in Morgans and also because Dad told me that I should get a dual purpose horse. And then we started searching for Morgans and found Mrs. Pewe’s website and started talking to her and she pointed us to Mrs. Thiel and sent us the November newsletter and in that I saw Darla for sale. We thought and prayed about it and then we contacted Mrs. Thiel and set a date to go look at Darla and liked her and having saved my money from shoveling roofs with my brothers, since we have a lawn and house care business besides a farm (http://www.bartlettfarm.us/). A couple weeks after looking at Darla we decided to buy her. Darla is 12 years old and since we got her my brother Peter and I have been training her. And we have been watching Clinton Anderson’s movies recommended by Mrs.Thiel. I’m planning on using Darla for pulling fire wood out of the woods and trail riding. Lately I have been working on planning horse fencing so this year and up coming years I will have a spot to keep the horses closer to the house instead of going way out in the in the pasture to get them, and also because the new horse doesn't like the cows very well.

Hello Recently I have been going through my emails looking for stuff to put on my blog. Here is another joke.

The plane crash I referred to happened only yesterday or the day before
on the south side of Hazen, North Dakota. It was labeled as "North Dakota's worst air
disaster" so I thought you might have read about it. I'll quote the
short article I read:

"North Dakota's worst air disaster occurred today when a Cessna 152, a
small 2 seater plane, crashed into a Norwegian Lutheran Church cemetery
here early this morning.

Ole and Sven, working as a search and rescue team, have recovered
826 bodies so far and expect the number to climb as digging continues
into the evening."

Government surveyors came to Ole's Minnesota farm last spring and asked if they could do some surveying. Ole agreed, and Lena even served them a nice meal at noontime.

After their work was done, the surveyors told Ole, "You were so kind to us; we wanted to give you the bad news in person, instead of by letter."

"What's the bad news?” asked Ole.

Hello Yesterday I went with Dad to drop off a goat at the local butcher shop for somebody, and then Dad dropped me off at a guy's place that we work for to pick up some rock and do some mowing. Since I was working on the rock I got to drive his four wheeler to haul the rock to dump it on some landscaping that the rock got washed away last time it rained. Hello This morning Mom noticed in the paper that somebody was selling a brush cutter and a pasta maker so Dad called the guy up and asked if we could go over to the guy's place and maybe buy them. The guy said we could come and look at them, so Dad, Andrew and me went over to the guy's and decided that we would get them both. Hello I suppose I should blog because I haven't blogged for four days. A few days ago we put the plastic on the hoop house. Dad is planning to go to the auction barns at Rugby on the 15 to buy some yearling steers that we will grow up and butcher them and then sell the meat. geting stuck

Hello The day before yesterday Jonathan was on his way back from dropping off Peter at Metigoshe Ministries about half a mile from here a guy with a pickup truck was stuck so Jonathan tried pulling him out but that didn't work, and then Dad and me pulled up because were wondering what took him so long, so we got some shovels that we keep in the car in the winter and started digging the truck out and then Jonathan pulled him out and then we unhooked and then pulled to side of the road to let the other guy go by and then when the other guy went by he kind of drove to far over to the side and got stuck in the other side of the road so then Jonathan and me tried to pull him out but in the process Jonathan was backing up to pull the other guy out but got stuck so we had to shovel 13 yards of snow so we finally got that done we tried pulling but the truck just slid sideways and then Jonathan decided go home and get Dad and Andrew to help shovel so we went back and put on our coveralls on and then left again when we got back to where the guy got stuck and we had to dig 10 more yards and then Dad finally pulled the guy out, and then when we got home we helped Mom make pizza. Got to go. David

For years, the dream has been to bring the airplane into the garage. But the promise of a car that flies has been an elusive one. Once Massachusetts-based company is trying to change that reality. The Transition Roadable Aircraft is specifically designed to appeal to the practical pilot who must contend with the realities of an urban, automobile-centric environment.

The airplane can cruise up to 450 miles at 115+ mph, take off and land at local airports, drive at highway speeds on any road and fit in a normal suburban garage space. The two-seat vehicle has front wheel drive on the road and a propeller for flight, transforming from plane to car in thirty seconds. Both modes are powered by unleaded automobile gasoline. By giving pilots a convenient ground transportation option, the Transition is intended to reduce the cost,

Dassault Systèmes, a maker of 3D and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solutions, today announced that its CATIA brand has been chosen by Terrafugia, creators of the revolutionary Transition® Roadable Aircraft, for 3D composite and finite-element modeling. Terrafugia will use CATIA Analysis and CATIA Composites Design (CPD) solutions to design and develop its beta prototype, with delivery expected in 2011.On the airstrip,

After Terrafugia completed a successful Proof of Concept for the first version of its Transition Roadable Aircraft in early June, the design team began planning the vehicle’s second iteration. Having spent several years developing the initial Transition prototype, Terrafugia identified multiple ways in which they wanted to adjust the original design, including experimenting with alternate materials and sizing for the wings. In order to analyze the way different materials would bend or move under various conditions, the company required a solution with advanced 3D composite ply-modeling, dedicated part-modeling and material behavior simulation capabilities.

RAND North America, a value-added reseller of Dassault Systèmes PLM solutions, recommended that Terrafugia adopt CATIA for its composite modeling needs. RAND chose CATIA’s composite solutions for their exacting technical features, which would help Terrafugia correct problems like wrinkles and bridges in the very first stages of design by visualizing ply characteristics and fiber behavior. They also emphasized CATIA’s value as an independent finite-element analysis (FEA) tool, thereby eliminating the need for a separate FEA investment.

Impressed by its success with Dassault Systemes’ SolidWorks 3D design suite, which it began using in March 2009, Terrafugia adopted CATIA Analysis and CATIA CPD as composite-focused complements to its existing SolidWorks infrastructure.According to Ben Zelnick, engineer at Terrafugia: “CATIA is a great complement to our SolidWorks solution. Being able to have a full digital model of a ply-by-ply layout will allow us to conduct accurate structural analyses, which is invaluable in reducing the weight of the Transition. In fact, we recently correlated an analysis of a CATIA model of a portion of the structure closely to a sample tested in our facility.

Terrafugia, based in Woburn, Mass., was founded in 2006 by award-winning MIT-trained aeronautical engineers and MBAs—who also happen to be passionate private pilots. The company’s mission is to provide innovative solutions to the challenges facing personal aviation. Taking advantage of new FAA regulations in the Light Sport Aircraft category, Terrafugia developed the Transition to provide pilots the convenience of a dual-purpose vehicle. Its unique design allows the Transition to fold its wings and drive on any surface road with a modern personal airplane platform. Once at the airport, the wings extend and the aircraft is ready for take-off. Both folding and extending the wings is done from inside the cockpit.

The Transition addresses head-on the issues private and sports pilots face: cost, weather sensitivity, high overall door-to-door travel time and a lack of mobility at destination. In July of 2008 Terrafugia returned to EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI with a completed proof of concept Transition vehicle. Powered testing of the proof of concept has been ongoing during the second half of 2008. Construction, testing and certification of the production prototype will follow completion of the proof of concept’s testing program. First customer delivery of a Transition Roadable Aircraft is expected to occur in 2011. To date, Terrafugia remains privately funded by a sophisticated group of accredited individual investors.For the upcoming second prototype, Terrafugia’s design team is using CATIA Analysis to create preliminary design simulations rapidly, easily and within a familiar CAD environment. The solution allows the team to optimize its designs based on product performance specifications and to quickly make updates after real-world testing. Moreover, the company is using CATIA CPD to build and test reinforcement spars on the prototype’s structural panels. CATIA CPD gives Terrafugia the ability to verify whether it can feasibly produce what is designed and the ability to perform simulation directly in the same environment.
